Effective Ways to Neutralize an Intense Cannabis High

Effective Ways to Neutralize an Intense Cannabis High

Any diehard cannabis enthusiast knows what it feels like to consume too much. It is possible to get too high after weed delivery. It is not a pleasant feeling. Sometimes edibles, for example, take too long to kick in and impatience gets the better of you. Perhaps you inhale too deeply, or are trying concentrates for the first time and find their potency a surprise. Maybe you just have a low tolerance for weed.

It is so easy to “overdose” on cannabis. It can happen in a myriad of ways, and when it does, the experience can be extremely unpleasant, certainly very uncomfortable, and even nasty enough to make connoisseurs reconsider trying it again. However, there is no need to worry. Most of us know the feeling and it will pass. Until then, there are some ways to help you come back down from that intense high:

  • Calm Down

It is important that you do not panic. Just calm down. It may feel bad, but most symptoms of overdosing on tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, are temporary and will dissipate soon enough, leaving only some grogginess behind. Wait it out. It will pass. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, weed has never killed anybody. Not once. Ever. However, if you panic, the anxiety will just make you feel worse.

  • Eat and Drink

Drinking some water and eating some food, even if just light snacks, will help you feel better. It does not have to be water, but try to avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee. Some fruit juice will work well too, and it will fight that dry mouth feeling, while forcing you to focus on familiar and simple actions, like taking a sip and swallowing. Avoid alcohol, as alcohol famously increases concentrations of THC in the blood.

Eating something will help you feel grounded again. However, rich, heavy foods may make you feel nauseous, so stick to light snacks, such as cheese, nuts, and even fruits. You do not have to eat plenty either, just a handful of nibbles will do, and it will be enough to calm your blood pressure and make you feel worlds better again.

  • Try Black Pepper

Black pepper, that simple household spice found in restaurants and kitchens the world over, can rescue you very nicely from feelings of overwhelming anxiety and paranoia. Cannabis enthusiasts everywhere swear by it, and according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, so do scientists, with studies proving black pepper a powerful anxiolytic. Just take a whiff, or chew a few peppercorns for instant relief.

  • Get Some Sleep

It may be difficult to close your eyes, but find a quiet spot somewhere to try. Breathe deeply, take a rest, and remember this feeling will pass. Breathing is notoriously calming, so take deep breaths and focus on breathing in through your nose and out of your mouth. Listen to your breathing, and just rest for a bit. This is very therapeutic if you are not at home, but if you are, then go to bed.

Sleeping is often the best way to get over a bad high, even if you may struggle switching your brain off. If you can find a safe area to lie down and sleep, then do so, but if you simply cannot fall asleep, then just lie there comfortably until the unpleasantness passes. It will not be long before you will feel happy enough to join the world again.

  • Walk It Off

If you really cannot sleep or relax enough to rest quietly, then get some fresh air and a change of scenery. A walk will reinvigorate you and get your blood pumping again, but do not stray too far and get yourself lost. Nobody wants to get lost when he or she is already feeling anxious and paranoid. Additionally, do not walk it off if you are feeling light-headed or woozy. Rather lie down in that case.

  • Keep Busy

Distracting yourself is the best way to forget about feeling bad. Do something, anything, to keep your mind occupied. Take a bath or have a shower. That is always a great way to relax. Watch movies, listen to music, play video games, write a poem, paint a picture, chat with your friends, or climb into bed with your significant other. Choose a familiar distraction, as this will reinforce feelings of safety.

  • Try CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, actively combats the effects of THC. This is especially useful if you ever consume too much, as CBD can literally reverse your high. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, CBD has powerful anxiolytic properties, capable of relieving the worst anxiety, even full-blown paranoia. Have some in your cupboard for such occasions. There are CBD edibles, oils, and much, much more.
