How Marijuana Can Slow Tumor Growth

How Marijuana Can Slow Tumor Growth

The scientific community, after conducting several prominent studies and reviews, agrees unanimously that lawmakers need to revisit the legal status of marijuana. Given the results of existing research, which proves cannabis able to both inhibit the growth of tumors and help manage cancer and its treatment better, keeping it illegal might well be a crime against humanity.

Patients are searching “marijuana delivery near me” in droves, and for good reason, which research clearly supports. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, sufficient literature exists detailing the effects of cannabinoids on different cancers, as well as their many therapeutic properties that make treating both the cancer itself and the side effects of treatment easier to manage.

What the Literature Says

Besides just the widely recognized ability of cannabis to treat the side effects of chemotherapy, the plant proves even more beneficial for cancer therapy. Studies show it slowing the growth of cancer cells and, in some cases, even killing cancer cells in laboratory tests. Researchers wrote that, “THC and CBD exhibit effective analgesic, anxiolytic, and appetite-stimulating effect on patients suffering from cancer.”

However, there is more. An abstract of the study further explained, “Apart from exerting palliative effects, THC also shows promising role in the treatment of cancer growth, neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis,) and alcohol addiction, and hence should be exploited for potential benefits.”

Most studies reviewed for the literature analyzed in vitro specimens, not human subjects. These in vitro experiments involve studying isolated cancer cells, with other studies researching mice. Cannabinoids clearly “exert potent anti-growth activity and activate various apoptotic mechanisms, eventually leading to cell death” of glioma cancer cells, glioma being an aggressive brain cancer.

One clinical trial on patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme, who enjoyed “proprietary combination of THC and CBD” treatment, as well as conventional pharmaceuticals, lived a full year longer than the placebo group. At least 83 percent of participants had a higher one-year survival rate than the 53 percent on the placebo.

What This Means for Tumor Growth

According to the National Cancer Institute, cannabinoids activate receptors that trigger mediated apoptosis, or the death of cells. Several studies observe similar findings in certain cell lines of prostate cancer. It is clear: Cannabinoids kill cancer cells in laboratory studies. Only clinical trial will establish this as fact in human subjects, but it induces apoptosis, prevents metastasis, or spreading, and slows growth.

One study found “significant cell growth inhibition followed by apoptosis.” This particular type of cancer cell was the subject of a “study which was designed to evaluate the in vitro effects of endocannabinoids, such as 2-arachidonoyl glycerol, anandamide, and its synthetic analog methazolamide.” This proves especially beneficial as a potential therapeutic application for cancer treatment.

Fewer studies observe the effects of marijuana on liver, oral, breast, and lung cancers, but research is underway, with the study’s authors noting studies where mice infected with certain lung cancers received cannabinoid therapy with THC. The study found “a notable reduction of the subcutaneous tumor growth and lung metastasis” of those cells, making it ever more the target of therapeutic use.

However, the scientists also found that, despite the common focus being on THC, other cannabinoids showed exceptional potential in the treatment of various cancer types. For example, 940-CBD, a synthetic CBD molecule, proved most effective “in terms of anti-proliferative effects and invasiveness” of a particular line of breast cancer cells.

It showed that, after receiving THC therapy, oral cancer cells “highly resistant to anticancer drugs” increased their “cellular respiration inhibition.” Other conventional options for treatment did not show such effect. While studying a wide variety of cancer treatments, they concluded, “The utilization of THC and its derivatives is still unexplored pharmacologically owing to their habit-forming nature.”

Furthermore, the study noted that, “Specific targeting of cannabinoid receptors can be used to manage severe side effects during chemotherapy, palliative care, and overall cancer management. Furthermore, research evidences on cannabinoids suggest tumor inhibiting and suppressing properties which warrant reconsidering legality of the substance.”

Cannabis Going Forward

It is no wonder more cancer patients are trying marijuana as medicine. Searches for “marijuana delivery near me” continue to skyrocket. The study concluded with the most important of all findings, stating, “Studies on cannabinoid receptors, in case of cancers, have demonstrated the psychoactive constituents of cannabinoids to be potent against tumor growth,” proving THC more anticancer than CBD.

Since the ability of THC and other cannabinoids to activate CB1 and CB2 receptors “tends to limit human cancer cell growth,” the future of weed as a treatment for cancer seems secure. Further quoting the study, the “role of the endocannabinoid system as a novel target for treatment of cancers, and “further explorations are required to exploit cannabinoids for effective cancer management.”

These findings, and others, highlight other studies also studying the effects of cannabinoids on tumor growth and various cancers. Like this one, these reviews show that while cannabinoid variations used to treat specific cancer cell lines are important to consider, the mounting evidence of cannabis killing cancer cells and inhibiting tumor growth suggests a major focal point for study going forward.
