Maine: The Newest Entrant in Recreational Marijuana Legalization

Regulation of marijuana benefits

The list of states legalizing the use of recreational marijuana continues to grow. This time around, California was not alone. There was still another state that voted for the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. That was none other than the state of Maine. There was a delay in the delivery of the referendum results and after two days or so, the results were finally out. It was a very tight decision reported to be within a tiny proportion of a percentage point. There were high hopes from supporters during the 2016 election and even before the results were announced, they had already declared victory for Medical Marijuana.  Many of the supporters believed that they would be growing marijuana in their homestead by Christmas day.

Voting for recreational marijuana required more than just making sure that it passed. Electing leaders who would implement it was also of equal importance. During the campaign period, there are those politicians who publicly declared their support for marijuana while others went silent on the issue. Well, it was good news from the Republican State Senator; Eric Brakey who expressed support for the implementation process. He said that people in Maine had voted and the task remained on the state officials to execute it. This was a step further on marijuana reforms that have been going on for centuries in the United States. Previously, medical marijuana was decriminalized in Maine and like several other states, the state succeeded in establishing its own recreational marijuana laws.

What Next After Recreational Marijuana Legalization?
The decriminalization of marijuana for recreation use is expected to permit individuals aged 21 years and above to use a maximum of 2 ½ ounces of cannabis. There is a lot of excitement on this issue and with recreational marijuana legalization, social clubs and cannabis shops are expected to open around the region.  Well, some municipalities have withdrawn from permitting businesses of this nature to open up in their neighborhood. There are still some battles and some opponents felt that a recount of the votes was needed. However, now that the motion passed, all has been left to lawmakers, for them to decide on what to do next. At least it is not a mandatory require like paying taxes and no one can impose marijuana on another person.

Despite some opposition coming from some of the campaigners against the decriminalization of recreational marijuana, proponents welcome the move and seem to be prepared to enter the trade with full force. Opponents were of the opinion that decriminalization was a threat to the welfare of children. On the contrary, the supporters are looking forward to see the implementation of the use of marijuana for recreational purposes. They can’t wait to see marijuana in retail outlets by 2018. This is what is hoped for, there are fears that this won’t happen until after Law making procedure by the state that could be slow and difficult.

Looking at the way things are at the way things are, it seems that those who voted for the recreational marijuana legalization have unfinished businesses. They must be at the fore front to ensure that the law is fully implemented. It has also been stated that all cannabis for sale in Maine will be cultivated in Maine. There is excitement that Maine has joined several other states like Nevada, California and Massachusetts that have continued with reforms on the use of marijuana. Adults will no longer be punished anymore for smoking weed under the defined rules and regulations. States that had already legalized recreational marijuana before were Washington, Colorado, Alaska and Oregon.
