NBA Players Call for Permission to Use Medical Marijuana For Pain Relief

Medical Marijuana

The federal government is currently taking one, pretty stubborn stance on marijuana, whilst some states are locally legalizing marijuana either for regulated medicinal use or even for full recreational use. This is making the whole subject of marijuana quite complicated.

Whilst there are state relaxations on marijuana, the National Basketball Association, like the feds, are maintaining a full ban on the use of the substance. At present, those players found to be using marijuana, by means of testing or otherwise face suspension amongst a range of other penalties. The question now arises – should the NBA continue it’s blanket ban on the substance for medicinal use now that 23 states and counting have legalized Medical Marijuana For Pain Relief or for other medicinal purposes?

Players Unanimously Agree They Should Be Allowed Access to Medical Marijuana Benefits

10 NBA players have spoken anonymously to express their desires to have the NBA reassess their views medical-marijuana-pain-managementon Marijuana.   Ultimately, the players wish to have marijuana removed from the NBA’s list of banned substances, if for nothing else, for the Medical Marijuana Benefits for those players who have a valid medical prescription for the drug.

The players have a valid point. If a person has a prescription for any drug, then why shouldn’t they be allowed to take it? Medical treatments are given for a reason and the ethics should be questioned when an organization chooses to bar a person from taking something that has been prescribed by a medical profession. Whilst players agree that the NBA shouldn’t necessarily shout about allowing marijuana use amongst players, they believe that players should have the right to access medical marijuana without penalties from the Association.

Changes Wont Come Overnight For Those Who Want To See Medical Marijuana Allowed in the NBA

Medical MarijuanaWhilst the players seem to unanimously agree that the NBA should relax their attitude towards medical marijuana, they understand that the changes won’t come quickly. The NBA works on a bargaining session system, the next of which wont be until 2017. This will be the next possible time that the NBA Players’ Association will be able to discuss the matter of marijuana and its future within the NBA. Whilst this seems a long way off, it does give the Players’ Association, which has the players’ rights as their highest priority, the time they need to put a case together for the safe use of medicinal marijuana in the NBA.

Although there is still a long way to go, and a lot of time in the way, it does seem that there is the possibility for players in the NBA to have the right to use medical marijuana without punishment from the organization. As it seems that players feel strongly about having the right to use medicinal marijuana, it is hoped that when the panel does meet, it will vote in favor of the player’s requests.
